The head of the Kurd-led Syrian Democratic Forces Wednesday thanked Moscow for saving his people from the "scourge" of war after Russia struck a deal with Ankara ending its weeks-long Syria offensive.

In a phone call with Russia's defence minister and military chief, Mazlum Abdi also said he had "reservations" over some points of the deal, calling for further "dialogue" with Russia, according to an SDF statement.

The agreement signed in Sochi on Tuesday strips Kurdish forces of some of their major towns and cities in northeast Syria, quashing their dreams for a semi-autonomous region.
